Ambiguity

with Jack Garland

"My name is Jack Garland, I’ve been shooting for around a decade in and around my hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado. Most of what I choose to shoot is in the realm of ambiguity wrapped in melancholy or some bastard child amalgamation of all wistful emotions. As a child, I wanted to be a cinematographer, drawn to how images could relay a feeling, set a scene or put you outside yourself. I found through this curiosity that using photography as language and expression was easier for me than explaining myself through talking or writing. Through this natural curiosity, I found photos could relay my moods, my concerns as well as my desires. Never being technically trained I feel like I’ve managed to keep a sense of innocence with my work. I’ve never thought too hard about all the technical or practical aspects of photography, instead, I’ve instinctively relied on capturing with a gut feeling. I like to think that’s the way my subconscious has learned to communicate with me. I allow it the space to find what it wants to tell me and then I capture it. Call it a cop-out for just shooting ambiguous long exposures at night but I think, subconsciously I am trying to say something about how I feel while allowing viewers the scene to put their own experiences on my work as well."
